Starting this Saturday (Feb. 28), Red Line riders should budget an additional 10-15 minutes of travel time on select evenings through April as a repair project focused on a signal station that was damaged in a 2019 derailment near JFK-UMass station gets underway.
The multi-week project will not involve shuttle buses, but will cause “temporary evening service changes” over four phases.
Riders should expect longer evening travel times between Broadway and JFK/UMass and a reduced frequency of trains along the entire line.
“We’re taking the time now to do the work correctly, modernize the system, and improve the Red Line’s reliability long-term,” said Interim MassDOT Secretary and MBTA General Manager Phillip Eng.
“By doing this work in a phased evening approach instead of a full shutdown,” he said, “we’re also delivering essential improvements while minimizing disruption for riders. I thank riders for their patience while we accomplish this critical work.”
The service changes will not occur on the Sunday of the St Patrick’s Day Parade or on Patriots’ Day/Marathon Monday, according to the T.
