Elected officials who represent Bostonians in Washington roundly condemned the launch of the US-Israeli attack on Iran last weekend— an action that President Trump himself referred to as “war” in a speech announcing the assaults.
US Sen. Elizabeth Warren posted a statement calling for Congress to assert its authority. “Donald Trump’s single-handedly starting another war with Iran is dangerous and illegal,” said Warren. “‘America first’ doesn’t mean dragging the United States into another forever war built on lies while ignoring the needs of Americans here at home.
“The Constitution is clear: only Congress can declare war. The Senate must come back in session immediately to vote up or down on a War Powers Resolution.”
Said US Rep. Ayanna Pressley in a social media post. “Donald Trump does not care about civilians in the region or the safety of US troops. He’s illegally bypassing Congress and starting a war with Iran that has already killed dozens of children. This is unacceptable. Congress must take action to rein in Trump and save lives.”
In an interview with WHDH-TV, Congressman Stephen F. Lynch said, “It is a constitutional duty for the president to consult with Congress before launching significant military operations. We feel we’re putting our sons and daughters in harm’s way without full understanding.”
US Sen. Ed Markey called the military attack on Iran “illegal and unconstitutional. It was not approved by Congress and holds dangers for all Americans… Trump’s illegal actions raise the threat of escalation into a wider regional war with grave risks for U.S. troops and civilians in the region.”
Markey called on Congress to act, urging lawmakers to assert their constitutional authority. “Congress must immediately vote on Senators Kaine and Schiff’s bipartisan War Powers Resolution and do its constitutional duty.”
