A property owner on Hannon Street neighbor wants to build a five-story, 24-unit apartment building at the site of a two-family home that was heavily damaged by fire in 2021. An online public meeting on the proposa will be held March 17 by the city’s Planning Department.
According to a Small Project Review filing with the Planning Department, Ervin Alves – who grew up across the street at 15 Hannon St. where his mother still lives – wants to build the apartment complex at 14-18 Hannon St. The property includes the fire-damaged two-family house that he lived in and a vacant lot next door. All told, the two parcels contain 10,691 sq. ft. and the new building would be more than 23,000 sq. ft.
That “prompted Mr. Alves to begin planning this redevelopment project as an opportunity to reinvest in his neighborhood,” read the filing.
He has partnered with Beth McDougal of McDougal Architects, a Boston-based architectural firm, but no general contractor has been chosen yet. There would be six parking spaces and ample bicycle storage on what is now two parcels. There would be a roof deck and Alves has pledged to include four affordable housing units in the building as per regulation.
The building would be within the Redefining Our Community (ROC) neighborhood off of Norfolk and Morton Streets.
