An end looms on the horizon for the ongoing $32 million reconstruction of Cummins Highway in Mattapan. Originally slated to conclude this month, it will instead be wrapping up in the late summer, city officials told The Reporter this week.
The roadway repair project, focused on the stretch between Fairway to Harvard Street, began in 2024. The surface was stripped down to the roadbed, resulting in dirt roads, numerous stop signs, and difficult travel.
The heaviest construction continues near the Blue Hill Avenue station on the Fairmount Line. Still pending work includes more street paving, sidewalk construction, bus stop amenities, tree plantings, and other landscaping.
The final project includes a narrowing of the road, wider sidewalks, a bike lane, and a new roundabout at Alabama Street.
