World Cup frenzy got off to a big start in Mattapan on Saturday afternoon with the World Cup Mattapan Family Fun Day organized by the Mattapan Square Main Streets organization.
Hunt-Almont Park in Mattapan served as the spot for vendors, music, food, games and an Adult League soccer game – all serving as a warm-up for the big World Cup game on Saturday between Haiti and Scotland in Foxborough.
There was high energy and a big Haitian American presence at the celebration. The Main Streets organization used the opportunity to convene one of their first big events after re-invigorating the organization over the last six month. With new President Yionel Torres and an almost entirely new board, the energy of the merchant’s organization is picking up steam.
In addition to the adult soccer game, there was also a domino tournament, a Spades card tournament, and a three-point shooting competition.
The soccer game was held with assistance from MassSoccer, and the Blue Haiti team prevailed over the Red Haiti team, 4-2.
