The Boston Teachers Union slammed today’s Supreme Court decision that allows the Trump regime to terminate Temporary Protected Status protections for hundreds of thousands of Haitian immigrants, warning that the ruling could destabilize families across Massachusetts and particularly in Boston.

Many children of TPS holders attend Boston Public Schools, according to BTU President Erik Berg, who said the ruling will create fear and uncertainty for students whose parents or relatives may now face the threat of deportation.

“Our students cannot thrive when they are forced to wonder whether a parent will come home at the end of the day or whether their family will be torn apart,” Berg said in a statement. “Today’s decision is heartbreaking for the thousands of Boston students whose families have built their lives in our communities, contributed to our economy, and enriched our classrooms.”

Berg said Boston’s public schools benefit from immigrant students, families, and employees, including BTU members who hold TPS status.

The union said it will continue working with community organizations, immigrant advocates, and public officials to support students and families affected by the ruling.

“As educators, we know that students learn best when they feel safe,” Berg said. “That sense of safety extends far beyond the classroom walls.”
