The Codman Square Health Center plans to launch a free, around-the-clock public vending machine offering naloxone and other essential health supplies outside its main entrance next week.
The machine, which was delivered on July 9, will be accessible without entering the health center, and no identification, insurance, or payment will be required.
Supplies will include naloxone, also known as Narcan, as well as water, snacks, condoms, menstrual products, hygiene kits, sunscreen, socks, rain jackets, and emergency blankets.
“Providing access to these essentials—at any time, day or night—helps preserve the privacy and autonomy of community members while taking an important step toward reducing stigma,” said Ursel Hughes, clinical program supervisor for Codman’s Community Health and Recovery Services.
The Boston Public Health Commission is reimbursing Codman for the purchase and installation of the machine and will help offset the cost of restocking it.
