Dorchester Baseball’s 10-and-Under team won the Mayor’s Cup tournament this summer and celebrated with the traditional Dorchester dip in the ocean after their hard-fought wins.
Coaches David Blandino, Eric Merner, and Phil Deeney led their charges to victory with a nip and tuck 17-16 opening game win against East Boston featuring Shea Griffin’s walk-off single in the bottom of the sixth.
They followed with a 9-6 win over Charlestown in extra innings with standout pitching by John Michael Newman, who threw five innings of one-run baseball and six strikeouts.
The championship game was a 3-2 extra-inning victory against South Boston keyed by game-saving plays at home plate late in the game. Defense and pitching were the deciding factors with Coley Murphy pitching six innings and giving up only two runs, and Mateo Cawley closing the game with two scoreless innings.
