Another Walgreen’s pharmacy store is closing its doors in Dorchester.
The Walgreen’s in Codman Square will close permanently on Sept. 10, according to a letter sent to customers on July 28.
The store at 585 Washington St. is owned by Codman LLC, which lists a Walgreen’s-related address in Illinois as its office. The 6,800 square foot building at the corner of Southern Avenue is worth just over $2 million, according to public records. It was built in 1928 and was formerly known as the Grant Building.
Pharmacy customers of the store were advised that they may go to other Walgreen’s locations on Morton Street in Mattapan and Dorchester Avenue by Savin Hill for re-fills on their prescriptions.
The Codman Square location is just the latest in a series of closures for the national chain. A large Walgreen’s store on Gallivan Boulevard closed its doors last April, part of a sweeping reduction that saw 1,500 stores close nationally across the 6,000-store system. The space is now being used temporarily for a seasonal Halloween costume store.
Another nearby Walgreens on River Street in Mattapan closed in 2022 and is currently being renovated to accommodate a facility for the state’s Department of Children and Families.
The news of the Codman Square closure comes a few months after the abrupt closure of The Daily Table, a grocery store.
