Boston families will have a new low-cost way to learn golf together this summer through a pilot program launching in August at the city’s two municipal courses, William J. Devine Golf Course at Franklin Park and George Wright GC in Hyde Park.
Mayor Michelle Wu and the Boston Parks and Recreation Department announced “Boston Family Golf Nights” last week in partnership with Boston Common Golf, the local team connected to the national TGL indoor golf league.
The program is aimed at beginner golfers ages 7 to 17 and their families, with introductory lessons followed by discounted evening rounds at the two layouts.
The sessions will cover golf etiquette, equipment, course safety, and basic skills, including practice on golf simulators. Afterward, families can take part in reserved evening tee times with guidance from course staff.
The program will run after 6 p.m. on alternating weeknights at the two courses. Families will be able to book a foursome—up to two adults and two children—for $25. Free club rentals will also be available. Instructional session will be capped at 12 participants each.
“Our municipal golf courses are some of Boston’s most beautiful public spaces, and they belong to everyone,” said Parks Commissioner Diana Fernandez Bibeau, who noted that the program is intended to “remove barriers to the game” and welcome more families onto the courses.
The announcement coincided with the launch of “Common Ground,” Boston Common Golf’s community platform aimed at expanding access to golf in Greater Boston and New England.
As part of the effort, Boston Common Golf will donate three Full Swing golf simulators to the city, with two expected to be installed at the Devine and Wright clubhouses for instruction and year-round programming.
More than 70 Boston youths attended the launch event last week at George Wrigh GC, where they received instruction alongside singer-songwriter Noah Kahan, a Boston Common Golf limited partner and ambassador, and Keegan Bradley, a PGA Tour golfer, Ryder Cup captain, and Hopkinton High graduate.
Registration for Boston Family Golf Nights opens on Mon., Aug. 3, at boston.gov/family-golf.
