Super heavyweight boxer Gilbert ‘Tonka’ Kabamba won three straight matches in Mexico last week to propel him to the gold medal at the Pan American Championships.
Kabamba, who lives and trains in Dorchester, beat boxers from Cuba, Brazil, and won by decision over Colombia’s Juan Patiño on Saturday night to win gold for Team USA’s Elite High Performance Squad.
He is still new to boxing, having picked up the sport a few years ago after college football didn’t pan out. He played high school football for Everett High and his teams won two state championships.
