Boston Foundation Awards Club Triple Play Grant
The Boston Foundation awarded a one-year grant of $50,000 to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Dorchester to conduct the program, “Triple Play.” The Club will involve 1,000 Club members in gaining a better understanding of the value of nutrition, being physically active, and getting along better in social and recreational situations. Club members at our Marr Clubhouse, McLaughlin Youth Center, and Denney Center Unit will be encouraged to: participate more in the organization’s athletics and aquatics programs; dine on tasty nutritious meals served at our Patriots Kids Café; attend nutrition classes and nutrition fairs; and take part in small group leadership development and recreational programs. The Club will formally evaluate the impact of each program area on the youngsters who participate. “The Boston Foundation’s support for ‘Triple Play’ is vital to helping our children to lead healthy lives. We are pleased that The Boston Foundation recognizes the importance of teaching our youth to lead a healthy and productive lifestyle,” said Bob Scannell, President & CEO of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Dorchester. According to the Foundation, the Club’s work is closely aligned with its commitment to encourage healthy behaviors among Boston residents and increase access to healthy food and opportunities for physical activity. Following a strategic analysis of its priorities and approach to grantmaking in 2009, the Foundation developed and rolled out a strategic framework for making a material, measurable contribution to critical issues facing Greater Boston. The grant to Boys & Girls Clubs of Dorchester will help the Foundation realize its vision of Greater Boston’s residents as successful and thriving. “Triple Play” is the largest wellness endeavor ever undertaken by Boys & Girls Clubs of America, of which Boys & Girls Clubs of Dorchester is a member, and is recognized by the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services. This national program takes a holistic approach to educating girls and boys about good nutrition, making physical fitness a daily practice, and developing good character and individual strengths, including feeling good about themselves and their surroundings.
