The All Dorchester Women’s Professional Network will host a free salary negotiation workshop on Oct. 18, part of a broader push from the city to close the gender pay gap by empowering women to negotiate for a fair wage.
Mayor Martin Walsh, in partnership with the American Association of University Women (AAUW) and the Office of Women’s Advancement, launched the fall series of workshops in mid September.
Pay gaps between men and women begin one year out of college, and intensify over time. A full-time working woman in the United States earns on average 79 percent of her male counterparts, with a wider gap for women of color, according to the US Census.
The negotiation workshops spun out of a five-year partnership between the City of Boston and the AAUW aimed at training 85,000 women — half of Boston’s working women. Any woman can attend the free sessions, which are taking place across the city through mid-November.
Attendees will participate in a two-hour workshop focused on four key skills: Know your value, identify a target salary and benefit package, know your strategy, and practice, practice, practice.
Dorchester and Mattapan women can mark their calendars for Tuesday, Oct. 18 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Harbor Health (1135 Morton St.) in Mattapan.
