State Police report a woman was attacked while walking on the Neponset Trail near Ryan Playground, 350 River St. in Mattapan around 2 p.m. on Tuesday.
The Dorchester resident "suffered contusion and laceration injuries" and was transported to Beth Israel Hospital for care, State Police say, adding she has since been released.
The suspect was described as a black man about 5'10" and in his 20s, with an afro about 3 inches high. He wore a navy-blue long-sleeve shirt and navy-blue sweatpants, State Police say, adding he fled through the playground parking lot to River Street.
On Wednesday, State Police issued a statement that said: "Based on information obtained by State Police Troop H detectives, we believe the attack on the 46-year-old female victim was random."
"To protect the integrity of the ongoing investigation, at this time we are not releasing any other details about the assault or investigative actions beyond what we released yesterday," the statement read. "State Police Troop H has always maintained, and will continue to maintain, a strong patrol presence on the bike path and other state properties in that area."
Anyone with information about the assault is urged to call 911 to be connected to the State Police.
