To the Editor:

My name is Mavrick Afonso, and I’m proud to announce my candidacy for Boston City Council to represent District 7—a district I have called home my entire life.

I’m a son of Boston and was born and raised in Four Corners. I’m a proud graduate of Boston Public Schools and a Roxbury homeowner, and I’ve seen firsthand the changes our neighborhoods have gone through—from Roxbury to the South End, Dorchester and Fenway —and I’ve spent my career in public service working to ensure those changes benefit everyone. I’ve seen our neighborhoods grow, and struggle, and I’ve always believed that the solutions to our biggest challenges can be found by listening to the people who live here.

I’m running for City Council because I believe District 7 deserves leadership that listens, leadership that acts, and leadership that understands what it means to live and work in this community. My candidacy is rooted in public service, and I’m proud of my experience working for the City of Boston and state government for over a decade and currently serving in the Commonwealth’s Office of Housing and Livable Communities.

I’m on the front lines of tackling the housing crisis—developing policy and directing resources toward the very challenges residents in our district face every day. That work has shown me how important it is to have local leaders who will advocate for smart, equitable, and community-driven development – and that’s exactly the kind of leadership I will bring to City Hall.

Our campaign is powered by the people. We’re not backed by special interests or political machines—we’re backed by neighbors. From youth leaders and artists to seniors and small business owners, the energy behind this campaign is grounded in the people of District 7. That means showing up in every corner of the district—from Roxbury to the South End to the Fenway—and listening to what residents need from their next city councilor. That’s why we’ve launched the District 7 Listening Tour—a series of community stops where I hope to hear directly from you: What keeps you up at night? What brings you hope? What do you want from your city government?

My name is Mavrick for a reason and I’m committed to being a fully independent voice on the City Council. I’m not running to represent the interests of any other elected official. I’ve built a career on standing with the people, not above them—and if elected, I will continue that commitment each and every day in office.

As we face challenges around housing affordability, public education, and transit equity, District 7 needs a city councillor who will show up, speak out, and get results. We need someone who understands how city government works—and who will make it work better for everyday people. That’s the leadership I’m offering, rooted in integrity, accountability, and a lifelong love for this community. District 7 also deserves a councillor who will be a true partner— responsive, and deeply committed to public service.

I’m here to work for the people, and I carry that responsibility with humility and determination.

I invite every resident of District 7 to be part of this campaign. Join us on our Listening Tour, share your story on our website or contact us on social media in order to help us build the future we all deserve—together.

Thank you for the opportunity to serve. I hope to see you on the campaign trail.

Mavrick Afonso
