It’s here

It’s here once again: Dorchester Day weekend — a joyful celebration of Boston’s biggest and most diverse neighborhood — will unfold Saturday and Sunday with two majors events expected to bring thousands of visitors, along with many thousands more of us who call Dorchester home all year-long.

The annual Dorchester Day Parade, a tradition that dates to 1904, will be the marquee event on Sunday.

The parade, which begins at 1 p.m. from the corner of Dorchester Avenue and Richmond Street, will follow a 3.2 mile course up Dot Ave to Columbia Road. The procession will include dozens of community groups, politicians, mounted units, performers, floats, and marching bands.

The route will prompt parking restrictions on Sunday morning through late afternoon along the length of Dorchester Avenue and on Richmond Street, where elements of the parade will form prior to stepping off in Lower Mills.

A full roster of parade units is printed on Page 2 of today’s special Dot Day section of the Reporter.

On Saturday, the fourth annual installment of what has fast become a beloved Dot Day tradition: Dorchfest, our neighborhood’s interpretation of the porch-fest-style parties popularized in other communities, will kick off at noon.

Events will be staged at 40-plus locations— mostly private residences— on the side streets near Ashmont MBTA station. The event runs until 5 p.m. with artists from a wide array of musical genres represented. A full schedule of performances is available online at Dorchfest.com.
