The union representing Boston’s firefighters approved a new contract with the city of Boston last week that promises the first responders a 2.5 percent pay hike with an additional 2 percent increase over the next three years. Mayor Wu hailed the $90 million labor agreement as a one that “will improve quality of life for our firefighters and strengthen operations within the department.”
Sam Dillon, the president of the Dorchester-based IAFF Local 718, said: “I want to thank Mayor Wu for not only recognizing that service, but for her sincere efforts to compensate and care for our Firefighters and their families.”
The vote to ratify the contract took place on Dec. 22, Wu said. It covers some 1,500 employees of BFD and runs retroactively from July 1, 2024 through June 30, 2028. Wu’s office said the new contract offers new pay rates based on years of service, institutes a new electronic application” for paid details, and allows retired firefighters under the age of 75 to work paid fire details.
The contract must still be approved by the Boston City Council when councillors are sworn in on Jan. 5.
