Foundation supports good works in name of the late Dr. John FX Mahoney

The John FX Mahoney, MD, Foundation will hold its 4th annual gala in the pavilion tent on the grounds of Granite Links Golf Course in West Quincy on May 28…

Dr. John FX Mahoney was the director of Neurology at Beth Israel Deaconess Milton Hospital for many years prior to his sudden passing in 2020. His Boston roots ran deep. Prior to his tenure at BID Milton, he worked at Carney Hospital and was a beloved figure in the Dorchester community, with private offices in Lower Mills and later at the Seton Medical Building.

Dr. John was born and raised in Brighton and was a proud alumnus of BC High, where he excelled as a student and hockey player. Later in life, he ran 10 Boston Marathons as well as a half-dozen Falmouth Road Races.

He graduated from Boston College and then from St. Louis University’s medical school on his way to becoming a highly-respected neurologist who gave generously of his time to share his knowledge and his great sense of humor —all wrapped in a calm and thoughtful demeanor.

This year, on Thurs., May 28, from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., the John FX Mahoney, MD, Foundation, in its continuing celebration of Dr. John’s impactful life in medicine and in his giving of self, will hold its 4th annual gala in the pavilion tent on the grounds of Granite Links Golf Course in West Quincy.

The foundation was created by John’s colleagues, family, and friends to commemorate his devotion to medicine, advance medical research, and  provide educational scholarships. It has partnered with Beth Israel Deaconess Milton to create a brand-new state of the art neurology center at the hospital that is named for John.

The trustees of the foundation extend to all a warm invitation to the gala, with the hope that this year there will be an even greater presence this year of John’s former patients, colleagues and friends from across his many Boston area relationships.

One notable example of the foundation’s relationships is the North Quincy High School’s carpentry program, which has become a valued supporter of the Mahoney Foundation. Last year, students created a stunning wooden American flag that was a standout success at the gala’s auction. This year, instructor Austin O’Malley and his students—Komaree Miles Brown and Tom Galligan—are building not one, but two handcrafted flags due to popular demand.

With support from Principal Daniel Gilbert and vocational liaison Rich Ragusa, the project highlights the importance of skilled trades and student craftsmanship. Both Carpentry 1 students have shown great enthusiasm and dedication, and their work will once again help raise funds for causes that were deeply important to Dr. Mahoney.

Tickets to the gala are available at mahoneyfoundation.com. Also, see our advertisement in the May 7th edition of The Dorchester Reporter for our scan code for the ticket link.
