A shutdown on the Red Line this week will involve shuttle buses replacing train service between Broadway and Ashmont starting at 6 p.m. on Thursday and continuing through Monday (May 18) as crews complete final tests on a new digital signal system.
Mattapan trolley service will also be suspended and replaced by free shuttle buses on Thursday at 6 p.m. through Friday to allow for upgrades to the Codman Yard Facility power substation.

According to the MBTA, the new digital signal system is expected to improve Red Line reliability. Crews will also perform track and tamping work between Savin Hill and Fields Corner during the shutdown.
Riders traveling on the Braintree branch will need to use shuttle buses between Broadway and JFK/UMass. Fare gates will be open at Broadway and JFK/UMass during the service disruption, officials said.
The MBTA is encouraging riders to use free Commuter Rail service between South Station and Braintree via JFK/UMass and Quincy Center during the shutdown. Riders traveling beyond Braintree will need to pay regular fares.
