Social Recreation Program News
The Social Recreation program is based out of the Club’s Gamesroom and features programming for our 6 to 12 year old members. In addition to daily tournaments, arts & crafts, and small group activities there are a number of special events approaching including: a trip to the Movies (9/23), the Worldwide Day of Play Event (9/24), and a trip to the Connors Farm Maze (9/30). Other activities include our small group clubs and the Kids Café’ program. The group activities include the Torch Club, Girls Group, Boys Group and Cooking Club. The Torch Club, a leadership development group club for ages 10-12, encourages members to take part in community service and education based programming and will meet on Wednesdays at 6:00 p.m. beginning on 10/6. The Girls Group and Boys Group offer group discussions and make plans for various trips and events. The Girls Group will meet on Fridays from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. beginning on 10/8 while the Boys Group will meet on Mondays from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. beginning on 10/4. The Cooking Club is a drop-in program where members learn to prepare nutritious meals while learning kitchen safety. This group will also meet from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. beginning on 10/7. Lastly, the Kids Café program provides registered members ages 6 to 12 with a hot, nutritious meal weeknights at 5:00 p.m. Applications for the Kids Café program are available at the front desk of all three sites. Education Program
The Education program at the Club is up and running, offering Homework Help to members of all ages four afternoons a week. For our members ages 6 to 12 the Education Center is open from 2:30 – 7:00 p.m. on a Monday to Thursday schedule while our teen members receive assistance right in the Teen Center from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. Staff are on hand to provide assistance at both sites. Other programs being offered this Fall include One-to-One Tutoring, Pico Crickets, KidzLit, I.S.E.E. Test Prep Class and College Bound. The One-to-One Tutoring program matches a member with a volunteer with weekly sessions scheduled. Please note that pre-registration is required and spots are limited. Pico Crickets will be offered to members ages 11 & older on Fridays. The program combines electrical engineering with fun games. Kidzlit is our Literacy program for members ages 6 to 12 and will meet weekly. The program encourages members to read both at the Club and at home. The I.S.E.E. Test Prep Class is for 6th and 8th grade students seeking to prepare for the exam to enter one of Boston’s three exam schools. Lastly, our College Bound program is a series activities offered throughout the year to assist our High School age members with the college selection and application process. Upcoming activities include an Admissions Essay Workshop on 10/14 and One-to-One sessions by appointment with the Education Director for College selection and admissions assistance. After-School Jobs Program
The Boys and Girls Club is pleased to once again partner with Mayor Thomas M. Menino and the Boston Youth Fund to offer a limited number of after-school jobs for teens ages 15 to 18. Interested teens must stop by the Club and pick up an application and take part in a quick interview. Please note that the spots are limited and not every candidate will be offered a position. These positions will assist Program Directors throughout our three facilities from November through May. Walter Denney Youth Center News
Our Denney Center Unit, located in the Harbor Point Housing complex offers drop-in activities for ages 8 to 18 as well as a licensed childcare program for ages 5 to 12. The after-school drop-in program offers activities from 3:00 to 6:00 for ages 8-12. Upcoming activities will include our Tutoring program with U-Mass Boston, Torch Club, Health & Fitness, Fine Arts classes and the Kids Café program to name a few. Our teen members can attend weeknights from 6:00 to 9:00 and can take part in activities such as McCormack School Gyms, Stonehill Tutoring (off-site), the Keystone Club, Munch & Mingle, Philosophy Club and more. In addition to these activities we also offer field trips, a monthly Parents Forum, and the Career Prep Jobs program. The licensed Childcare program is for ages 5 to 12 and includes a before-school component, extended hours during school vacations and the program accepts vouchers for eligible families.
