Career Launch Program
Thanks to the support of several collaborating partners the Boys and Girls Club has placed old and new teen members alike in summer employment positions at all three of our clubhouse locations, as well as several internships off-site, for the 2011 summer. With our collaborating partners from the Boston Youth Fund, Private Industry Council and John Hancock (M.L.K. Scholars Program) teen members have been placed in positions of employment within the Boys and Girls Club to serve as Recreation Assistants, Office Support, Group Leaders and more. Members took part in the registration and orientation process in mid-June, will take part in a day-long training, and will then begin working on July 5. These leadership positions, which assist the Club in operating programs for our members 76 hours per week, also give the participants valuable work experience and a chance to build upon or create a resume. At the conclusion of the summer program selected participants will be invited to fill a limited amount of school-year positions. We would also like to acknowledge the Boston Police Department and UMass Boston for providing off-site internships for several members. For more information on the various summer employment programs please contact VP of Programming at ext. 2110.
Senior Class
Night Event
On Tuesday, July 19, as part of the Safe Summer Streets program, we will hold a special event for our incoming Senior Class. This group of members will be invited to a workshop with Tania Glinski, an Admissions Representative from UMass Boston. The workshop will help the Senior Class prepare for this very important year, ensuring they are aware of all the steps needed to move their educational goals forward. We will review the college application process, discuss the S.A.T. exams, financial aid, scholarships, visiting schools and more. The workshop will be followed by an ice cream social for all participants. In September, this group will be invited back to the Club to meet with the Club’s Education Director, to learn of the activities being offered within the College Bound program during the school year designed to assist them throughout this process. For more information please contact Education Director, Emily Capurso at (617) 288-7120, ext. 2320.
