A Boston judge today ruled that a Hyde Park man arrested for killing a 32-year-old Dorchester woman on Saturday (June 20) in Mattapan Square should be held without bail while he undergoes a mental health evaluation for the next two weeks.

Ibraim Matos, 37, was arraigned in Dorchester Court on charges including murder, carjacking, leaving the scene of personal injury, leaving the scene of personal injury and death, and motor vehicle homicide by reckless operation in connection with the death of Mabinty Janneh, Suffolk District Attorney Kevin Hayden said.

Matos, whose defense attorney stated he suffers from PTSD and schizophrenia, pleaded not-guilty.

According to prosecutors, the incident began around 2 p.m. Saturday near 1466 Blue Hill Ave., where Matos was involved in a crash. Prosecutors allege that Matos then got out of his own vehicle and carjacked another before fleeing down Blue Hill Avenue.

A short distance later, he allegedly drove onto the sidewalk of Fairway Street where he struck Janneh, killing her. He reportedly then crashed into an MBTA bus and came to a stop, where bystanders aided the police in his arrest.

Judge Erika Reis ordered Matos be held without bail and also ordered that he undergo a mental health evaluation at Bridgewater State Hospital. He is due back in court on July 10 for a status review.

In a statement released Monday, Hayden called the incident “an instant nightmare in one of the busiest areas of our city.”

“It’s impossible to overstate the peril posed by this man’s actions when so many people were out and about enjoying a beautiful summer Saturday,” said Hayden. “We will do everything possible to secure justice for Mabinty “Binty” Janneh, for all those who loved her, and for the entire Mattapan community.”
