The United States Postal Service (USPS) is looking at all options in case their lease is not renewed for the retail postal branch in Fields Corner at the O’Hearn Building, 218 Adams St.
USPS spokesperson Judy Ferriera told The Reporter today that the current lease at 218 Adams St. in Fields Corner, which serves the 02122 zip code, expires on Oct. 31, but there has been “no formal decision regarding the facility.”
However, she also said that they are beginning to look for an alternate location if negotiations aren’t fruitful and the lease is not renewed.
“Should that happen, the Postal Service will search for a nearby site that balances convenient and reliable mail service for customers with operational feasibility, productivity, and financial sense,” Ferriera wrote in a statement. “No employees would be laid off, and mail deliveries would continue as normal if USPS decides to temporarily relocate retail service while a search for a new site begins.”

The O’Hearn building – once a storied music hall – was sold last year by the family of the late Rich Jerrier to The Beantown Companies of Waltham. A redevelopment plan of the site with a mix of residential and commercial space, new and restored construction, was approved in August 2025.
The Reporter has reached out to Beantown Companies and is awaiting their response on the leasing situation.
News of the potential move traveled fast throughout the Fields Corner business district this week, with some expressing concern about accessing retail service and an impact to foot traffic if the postal branch were moved.
“It’s my understanding that the new owner of the site has offered to continue to honor the contract and subsequently negotiate a new lease,” said District 3 City Councillor John FitzGerald. “My concern is the systemic dismantling of the USPS we have seen in other neighborhoods like Allston/Brighton who could be left with zero post offices to service them.
“I worry that we are seeing USPS deliberately let operations crumble in order to rationalize its privatization,”FitzGerald told The Reporter. “There should be no reason we lose this post office for the neighborhood.”
Allston/Brighton is currently in the middle of a fight to keep it’s post office branch intact, with District 8 Councillor Liz Breadon bringing that matter to the City Council on Wednesday.
The USPS did not confirm it, but sources told The Reporter that the 02122 Carrier Annex building on nearby Clayton Street is being considered as an alternative location if the Dorchester Avenue storefront is closed.
“This will definitely have an impact on the Fields Corner Neighborhood if the lease is not renewed,” said Judy Collier, who leads the Fields Corner Civic Association. “The post office has been and continues to be valuable to the community. To have reliable, walkable postal access right here in Fields Corner has been very convenient for years. Even a temporary relocation can still cause problems for local residents, seniors, and small businesses.”
