All-Star Basketball Program
This Winter the Club has 4 teams playing in the N.E.N.E.A.P.C. Basketball program against Boys and Girls Clubs from the region. Over the past month all four teams began playing games, winding their way through the regular season schedule, all hoping to qualify for the play-offs. The Boys 12&U team improved to 3-1 on the season after defeating the Chelsea Club by a score of 52-38. Leading the way were team members Edison Vazquez (12), Walter Dew-Hollis (8), Zelito Pina (8), Junior Monteiro (7), Jeffrey Herron (5), Andronique DosSantos (3), De’Andre Dew-Hollis (3), Dirique Richards-Brown (2), Ben Desir, Phillip Bennett, Brian Texidor, Romeo Miller, Dezmani Montrond and Joshua Herron. The Girls 14&U Stars improved to 3-1 on the season with a 32-14 victory over the Lynn Club. Leading the way for the Girls were D’Mitra Weathers (8), Jennifer Tavares (8), Cadejia Matthews (6), Selena Santos (6), Armani Monteiro (2), Jessica Teixeira (2), Jasmine Castro, Jailene Peguero, Kiara Lodge and Mizza Barros. The Boys 15&U squad hosted the Salem, MA Club last week, capturing a 55-41 victory to set their record at 2-0 on the season. Phillip Lodge (17), Rayshaw Matthews (14), Eduardo DeLeon (6), Stanley Harris (5), Evandro Teixeira (5), Emoni Vicente (4), Bernard Barbosa (3), Jay Rodrigues (1), Alberto Monteiro, Jason Fernandes, Francis DePina, Rafael Garcia, Cedric Correia, Marcus Campbell and Terrell Davis led the 15 & under squad. Finally, the Boys 18&U team opened their season by defeating the Nashua, NH Club 47-44. Leading the way on offense were Joey Centeio (12), Ryan O’Neal (10), Tyrik Jackson (10), Kendrick Jackson (3), Joey Brandao (3), Daquan Hardy (2), Paulo Maia (2), Beethovens Laguerre (2), Kenny Ribieiro (2), Johnathon Lopes (1), Kasim Tashir and Joao Fernandes. All four teams will continue regular season play into March followed by the play-off tournament for those teams qualifying. Savin Hill Baseball League Registration
The Savin Hill Baseball League will be holding registration for the 2010 season on Saturday, February 27th, from 10:00 to 2:00 at the Club. Parents can register children for T-Ball (5 & 6 Year olds), Major B (7 to 9 year olds), Major A (10 to 12 year olds), and Teen Intramural (13 to 15 year olds). Registration fees for the upcoming year are tentatively scheduled to be: T-Ball – $50.00, Major B and Major A – $60.00 and Teen League – $60.00. Parents should note that the Club will be hosting Spring Training and Try-out dates in March. Savin Hill Baseball League participants who wish to enroll in the Spring Training program must be registered members of the Boys & Girls Club. New participants to Savin Hill Baseball will be required to bring proof of age. Grand Re-Opening for Education Center Library
Thanks to a generous grant from the Met Life Foundation, which was offered through a national partnership with Boys and Girls Clubs of America, we are pleased to announce that we will be hosting events to celebrate the Grand Re-Opening of the Library space in our Education Center. During the week of 2/22 there will be events each afternoon to help dedicate the space. On 2/22 there will be a read-a-loud and book giveaway with volunteers from Comcast. On 2/23 there will be a scavenger hunt, web safety training and members will be able to sign up for Library cards. On 2/24 look for a special Family Dinner and the KidsLit Theater with raffles, games, crafts and more. On 2/25 there will be a “Drop Everything and Read†Challenge where club members will earn double points towards prizes. Finally, on 2/26 there will be member based read-a-loud activities as well as take home projects. All of the above events are open to members on a drop-in basis. Many thanks to the Met Life Foundation for their continued support of our Club’s Education program. In addition to the Library, the Education program offers Homework Help on a Monday-Thursday schedule, One-to-One Tutoring (pre-registration required) and small group clubs such as Kids Lit (reading), Icky, Sticky & Goo (science), Dough (money management) and Pico Crickets (engineering). There are also activities for teens as part of our College Bound program.
