All-Star Floor Hockey Seasons Come to a Close
The All-Star Floor Hockey season has come to a close with our Girls team losing in the championship game and our Boys team capturing their 3rd consecutive championship. The Girls advanced to the Championship, seeking their 3rd consecutive league title, by facing their 2009 opponent the Boys and Girls Club of Billerica. This year the roles would be reversed as Billerica took the championship with an 8-0 victory. Congratulations to team members: Cadejia Matthews, Jessica Teixeira, Jamila Barros, Elysha Gomes, Khalilah Evora, Jeilene Peguero, D’Mitra Weathers, Jasmine Castro, Joceline Cardoso and Jennifer Tavares on a great season. The Boys 13 & under All-Stars successfully defended their 2009 league championship by repeating as league champs – with a well played 9-3 win over the Charlestown Boys and Girls Club. The team was led by Nick Mastrogiacomo (2 goals), Bobby Scannell (2 goals), Sam Mastrogiacomo (1 goal), Edison Vazquez (1 goal), Charlie Curd (1 goal), Walter Dew-Hollis (1 goal), Michael Kapolis (1 goal), Desmond O’Halloran, Philip Chomicki and Zelito Pina. Marr-lin Swim Team News
The Marr-lin Swim Team is now into the final month of the dual-meet season as they close out January by hosting the South Boston (1/15), Billerica (1/22) and the Blue Hill Clubs (1/29). Selected members of the team will also travel to Nashua, NH (1/23) to take part in the Senior Invitational Meet. As the team heads into February they will take part in the league championship meet on 2/6 and 2/13 at U-Mass Boston. This 2-day meet will bring together all 16 teams in the N.E.N.E.A.P.C. league and well over 1,000 swimmers. After the league championship meet the team will participate in the Worcester Invitational and will follow that up by hosting their Annual Beanpool Meet. On the weekend of 3/11 & 3/12 the team will head to the Regional Championship Meet in White River Junction, VT. Denney Center Unit to Host Two Events
Our Denney Center Unit, located in the Harbor Point section of Dorchester, will host two community events next week. On 1/17, in partnership with U-Mass Boston, the Center will host an M.L.K. Day of Service event. There will be a hot breakfast followed by an inter-generational panel discussion and entertainment. This event will take place between 11:00 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. Later in the week, on 1/21, we will be hosting our Annual Winter Open House from 6 – 9 p.m. There will be food and activities for all our guests. We will also offer tours of the facility and orientations for new parents and members of the community. This will be a great opportunity to learn about the many exciting program opportunities available. In addition, on this night, new and recently expired members will be able to renew their memberships for free. Teen Program News
The Teen program at the Club has a busy month of activities planned with several special events on the Calendar. The first of those events took place on 1/3 when 30 members of the Career Prep program took part in a full-day training put on by Boys and Girls Clubs of America. The training, titled “Developing a Moral Compass” was designed to help facilitate their role as mentors to younger club members. Later in the month, on 1/15, 20 teen members will be guests of our friends at the Under the Tree Foundation as we enjoy a special lunch at Alme Nova followed by a Movie at the Hingham Theater complex. Other upcoming activities upcoming include the Girls Night (1/12), a trip to the Celtics Game (1/14), the Munch & Mingle (1/19), a trip to the Randolph Movie Theater (1/21) and our Club-wide Madden Video Tournament (2/5). Other Teen based activities include the Girls Group and Boys Group which meet weekly, the Teen-osophy Program, Guest Speaker Series, Career Prep employment program and our Leadership Development program, the Keystone Club.
