August Program Highlights
The month of August will close out the summer program with a bang as we have many exciting activities planned for all age groups. In our day program, for members ages 6-12 at our Marr/McLaughlin Clubhouses, upcoming activities include: the week-long camp partnership with the Boston Police Department for 13 members in the Junior Police Academy (8/1-8/5), A trip on the Codzilla Boston Harbor Tour (8/1), a visit from the Curious Creatures program (8/2), a second field trip on the Codzilla Boston Harbor Boat Tour (8/3), a trip for our Bantam members to the Puppet Showplace Theater (8/3), a visit from the Read Boston Storymobile (8/4), a workshop with the Metro Lacrosse program (8/4), a trip to Canobie Lake Park (8/8), a trip to Starland (8/10), a visit from the S.M.I.L.E. Initiative dental services program (8/11), and the session #2 ending Olympics Day (8/12). From 8/15 to 8/17 we will close out the on-site Summer program by offering the Triple Play Jamboree, an invitation only, on-site program with special activities being offered in all core program areas. At our Denney Center Unit, located in Harbor Point, our daytime program serves ages 6 to 12 with the following special activities on the schedule: a visit from the N.E. Aquarium Outreach program (8/3), a bus trip to the Movies (8/5), and a summer ending Field Day (8/12). For our teen members taking part in the Safe Summer Streets XXII program there are also a number of special events on tap including: the Annual Career Fair (8/3), the Summer Swim Team hosting the Waltham Boys and Girls Club (8/4), a Rock Climbing Trip with the Y.E.S. program (8/9), the Summer Swim Team closing meet and family barbecue (8/11), the Music program Open Mic Night (8/12), the Championship Game of the Girls Division of the Safe Summer Streets Basketball League (8/16), the Semi-Formal Dance (8/17), and the championship games for the two Boys divisions of the Safe Summer Streets Basketball League (8/18). Other dates include the completion of our Career Launch Summer Jobs program (8/12) and graduation event for those teen members taking part in the M.L.K. Summer Scholars program (8/19). So with on-site programming for the membership program concluding on 8/17 that does not mean the summer is over just yet. On 8/20, 150 members will board buses to take part in the 6th Annual Camp Northbound trip for a week of overnight camping in Maine. While in Maine, our members will take part in water sports, hikes, athletics, character building activities, arts and much more.
The following week, from 8/29 to 9/2, a group of 150 youth and chaperones will travel to Walt Disney World in Florida on our 20th Annual Disney for Kids trip. Parents, please note that Club will be closed for our drop-in program from 8/18 to 9/11. The school-year drop-in program will return on 9/12 at 2:00 p.m. Meanwhile, our Licensed Early Education and Care programs will continue to operate throughout the month with the School-age program enjoying on-site activities and off-site bus trips 2/3 days per week while our Pre-School program will host a Family Fun Day Kindergarten Celebration (8/26). Please note that when our on-site Summer program concludes on 8/17, our Childcare program will remain open with full-day infant, toddler, pre-school and school-age care offered throughout all three locations. As a reminder, you must be pre-registered to take part in any of our licensed programs and vouchers are accepted. Girls Safe Summer Streets Basketball League
The 4-team Girls Safe Summer Streets Basketball League began regular season play this past week. On Monday, the first of two games saw the Lady Zags defeat the Lady Thunder 30-19. Regina Crawford (18), Shalise DePina (10) and Jennifer Alves (2) led the Lady Zags while Candace Andrews (11), Kayla O’Brien (4), Gabrielle Soto (2) and Khalilah Evora (2) led the Lady Thunder. In the late game the Lady Cavs, behind the offense of Markiah Monteiro (20), Donika Morris (16), Jennifer Tavares (4) and Jasmine Castro (4) defeated the Lady Tigers 44-43. Cadejia Matthews (18), Brittney Andrews (12), Deonna Johnson (8) and Jessica Teixeira (5) led the Lady Tigers. On Tuesday the girls returned for two more games. In the first game the Lady Thunder, behind the duo of Destinee Morris (20) and Candace Andrews (20) defeated the Lady Cavs 66-48. Markiah Monteiro (20) and Jennifer Tavares (15) led the Lady Cavs. In the second game the Lady Zags defeated the Lady Tigers 48-46. Regina Crawford (25) and Marissa Sneed (19) led the Lady Zags while the Lady Tigers were led by Cadejia Matthews (24) and Jessica Teixeira (11).
