I was home from work five days in a row last week. I had a chance to sleep a couple of days until 7:15 a.m. Hubby and I listened to all of the school closing announcements Tuesday morning. Thank goodness that the City of Boston had canceled the previous day. I was the first one downstairs, so I made coffee. Then I decided that I was going to fix a different breakfast, not the usual oatmeal or cold cereal that I have on days that I work. I decided to make pancakes. I had bought a plastic bottle of pancake flour to keep in the house for days like this. All I had to do was add water and shake. I remember the days when I had to add milk and eggs, probably the last time I made pancakes years ago. I shook the bottle as the directions said, but I have a rotator cuff problem and probably cut short the time needed to blend the batter well. The first pancake that I poured into the frying pan had a small lump in it. Hubby was downstairs by now and saw the lump. “Get the lump back into the container quickly, and I’ll shake,” said he. Back went the lump, and he started to shake the container. The next batch of three pancakes was lump-free. We had some Vermont Maid Syrup, which was out of date. It looked okay and smelled okay, so Hubby took a chance. I had a partly filled bottle of Smucker’s Sugar Free Pancake Syrup, so I used that. It was delicious. Daughter Sue had purchased the bottle of syrup for me to try from a diabetic products company. By ordering one bottle, she paid only a small shipping charge. If she had ordered two or more bottles, she would have paid almost three times as much postage. I felt like Julia Child when I finished breakfast.

I also had time to cut out a big batch of coupons. Now if I would only put the coupons in my purse and use them. I also found a small photo of myself probably at four years of age. Of course, I had straight hair and bangs, as did most girls my age in those years. Looking at the photo, I was not that bad looking. I probably looked just like the other girls. I also noticed that I did not smile in the photo. When I was learning to walk in my walker, probably around my first birthday, one of the adults in the house left the gate unlocked between the dining room, down two steps, to the kitchen. I thought I could ride down the stairs in my walker and knocked out my two front teeth. In those years, there was no saving teeth, so I never smiled until my second set of teeth finally came in.

It is now Monday morning. I know that the Patriots have won the Super Bowl. What an exciting game! I’ll keep my Tedy Bruschi jersey nice and clean – FOREVER! By the way, the Patriots named Tedy as their honorary captain for the Super Bowl. He represented the team at the midfield coin toss before the start of the game.

Because of the storm I won’t be able to get to work today to add to this column. I will write about our amazing evening next week.
