The school-year program will end with a bang as the month of June will be peppered with special events in all core program areas. In our Athletics program we will host the Annual Triple Play Olympics on 6/2. The day will include track events, an obstacle course, and the championship game from our Intramural Soccer program, as well as a Health Fair in partnership with Neponset Health Center. Members of the Walking Club will be invited to the “Cheers for Champs” event at Fenway Park (6/4), and we will host the best 2-of-3 championship series for the 10-team Intermediate/Senior Basketball League (6/12, 6/14 and 6/16). In our Education program we will close out the Homework Help, One-to-One Tutoring and weekly drop-in club programs this month. Special events for the month include a trip to the Scooper Bowl (6/6), and the “Read to Ride” contest. In our Social Recreation program we will hold orientation for members invited to take part in Camp Northbound on 6/2 (Marr Clubhouse – returning campers) and 6/4 (Denney Center – New Campers), take members of the Outdoor Adventure Club on an overnight trip to Camp Ponkapoag (6/15 & 6/16), and host our Annual Member Recognition Night Dinner (6/28). Award winners will receive their invitation by mail. Additional events include our Field Day/Open House (6/9) and the Rodman Disney for Kids Trip Registration (6/16). In our Aquatic department the Swim Lesson program will wind down in early June. On 6/1 we will host the Watertown and Wayland Swim Teams in a special meet, and will follow that up with the championship Meet for the 6-team Intramural Swim League (6/2). Members of the Marr-lin Swim Team will also be competing in the Bay State Games (615 & 6/16). At our Denney Center Unit, located in Harbor Point, we will be host a teen trip to Go-Karts (6/1), a 3-day Cape House Retreat (6/8 to 6/10), the Munch & Mingle (6/13), and the Parents Forum (6/14). In our Arts program we will continue our Spring classes while also offering a trip to the Museum of Fine Arts (6/4), participate in a Fine Arts/Photography Show at the State House (6/6) a host a trip with the Marilyn Rodman Theater for Kids program to the Opera House to see “Mamma Mia” (6/21). In our Music Clubhouse we will begin accepting registrations for the Summer Lesson program for ages 10 & older from 6/11 to 6/15 (current lesson participants) and from 6/18 to 6/22 (new members). We will also host our monthly Open Mic Night event (6/15). In our Teen program members of the Keystone Club will be volunteering with The Greater Boston Food Bank (6/13), and with the Massachusetts Special Olympics (6/16). We will also be working with the 100+ members seeking summer employment within the Career Prep program. Upcoming Career prep events include Boston Youth Fund processing (6/2), the M.L.K. Scholars program Kick-off at B.U. (6/25) and our full-day staff training (6/29). Lastly, in our Patriot’s Kids Café, we will continue to serve a hot, nutritious meal to members weeknights at 4:45 p.m. through the end of the school year. Safe Summer Streets Basketball/Swim Team Registration
On 6/9 we will begin taking registrations for two upcoming Safe Summer Streets program activities. Included in the registration will be the 16-team Safe Summer Streets Basketball League for boys and girls ages 13-18. There will be three divisions of play: Girls (ages 13-18); Intermediate Boys (ages 13-15); and Senior Boys (ages 15-18). The league will play games in the evenings in July and August. The Summer Swim Team will also begin taking registrations for swimmers ages 6 to 18 who can pass a 50 yd. swim. The team practices Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings during July and August. Both programs are part of the Safe Summer Streets program which will be entering its 23rd year this summer. The program keeps our Marr Clubhouse open an additional 36 hours per week for our teen members on a Monday through Saturday schedule from 5-11 p.m. In addition to the activities mentioned above there will be many other activities including a Yoga Class, Theater for Kids trip to see “Billy Elliot”, Career Fair, College Alumni Night Cruise, Semi-Formal Dance, Community Service activities, Film/Video Program, Senior Class Workshop and much more.
