Marr-lins Attend National Championship Meet

Earlier this month 10 members of the Marr-lin Swim Team headed to St. Petersburg, Florida to take part in the Annual Boys and Girls Club National Swim Championships. These members posted the necessary qualifying times and practice attendance marks to become eligible for the meet and helped lead the team to a 9th place finish overall.

In addition, each swimmer posted new best times in several events such as: Sean O’Donnell – 50 yd. Freestyle (24.40), 100 yd. Freestyle (54.80), 200 yd. Freestyle (2:01.88), 100 yd. Butterfly (1:21.47), 500 yd. Freestyle (6:39.20) and 50 yd. Freestyle (31.08).

Congratulations to each of these swimmers on their accomplishments. Next up for our swimmers will be the 6-team Intramural League which will begin team practices next week. The league combines members of the Marr-lins with graduates of the swim lesson program and recreational swimmers. Practices are held one night a week and meets are held on Saturdays. Intermediate/Senior Basketball League Begins
The 10-team Intermediate/Senior Basketball League (I/SBL) began play this past week with eight games played over four days. On Tuesday, the first of two games featured Stanford taking on Boston College in a battle of two teams from the 4-team Intermediate division for players ages 13 to 15. Stanford needed overtime to pull out a 49-48 victory. Malik James (13) led Stanford while Alberto Monteiro (18) led Boston College. In the second game it was California defeating UConn 61-56 in the opener for the 6-team Senior division for players ages 15-18. Jonge DaSilva (16) and Tyrell Pugh (26) led California and UConn respectively. On Thursday, two more games were held with California defeating Syracuse in the opener 64-47. Nick Simpson (20) led California while Marc Samms (13) led Syracuse. In the late game Michigan, behind Dwayne Harper (18) defeated Kentucky 61-53. The duo of Bernard Barbosa (15) and Eduardo DeLeon (15) led the offense for Kentucky. One game was held on Friday evening with U.N.C. downing Boston College 53-47. U.N.C. was led by Zelito Pina (14) while Boston College was led by Jamari Jackson (18). On Saturday, the final three games of the week were held with U.N.C. defeating Georgia Tech in the opener 61-51. Zelito Pina (19) led U.N.C. while Georgia Tech was led by Kaylab Silva (22). In the middle game it was UConn holding on for a 69-59 win over N.C. State. Manny Spinola (14) led UConn while Evandro Teixeira (16) led N.C. State. In the final game Michigan upended Syracuse 61-58. Dwayne Harper (21) and Jonathon Lopes (23) led Michigan and Syracuse respectively. The Intermediate/Senior Basketball League will continue playing regular season games on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings through early June followed by the play-off tournament.
