Safe Summer Streets Boys Basketball Championships

The 4-team Intermediate and the 8-team Senior Boys divisions of the Safe Summer Streets Basketball League have completed their respective play-off tournaments. The final regular season standings for the Intermediate division had the Free Agents in first place at 7-3 followed by the Magic and Duke tied at 6-4 and the Lakers at 1-9. In the semi-final play-off round the opening game saw the Free Agents get by the Lakers by a score of 69-60. Rayshaw Matthews (23) Philip Lodge (16), Trey Moon (7), Francis DePina (5) and Kaylab Silva (2) led the Free Agents while the Lakers were led by Tino Goncalves (17), Jordan Williams (12), Bernard Barbosa (10), Evandro Teixeira (6) and Emmanuel Leathers (2). In the second game it was the Magic taking out Duke 71-69. The Magic were led by Paul Lewis (28), Eduardo DeLeon (16), Dwayne Harper (15), Emoni Vicente (6), Jason Gomes (3) and Manny Andrade (3) while Jared Terrell (30), David Harrison (14), Ryan Roach (11), Stephen Karlberg (4), Kenny Fairneny (2) and T.J. Vasquez (1) led Duke. In the championship game both teams battled back and forth and it wasn’t until late in the 2nd half that the Magic were able to pull away for a 60-56 victory and the 2009 championship. The Magic were led by Dwayne Harper (24), Paul Lewis (20), Eduardo DeLeon (9), Jason Gomes (5) and Manny Andrade (2) while the Free Agents were led by Rayshaw Matthews (26), Jonge DaSilva (20), Kaylab Silva (4), Trey Moon (2), Philip Lodge (2) and Francis DePina (2). In the Senior Boys division Run & Gun finished in first place with a 9-1 record followed by the Bullets at 7-3, C-Town at 6-4, the Tsunami at 5-5, the Ballers, Diplomats and Track Stars at 4-6 and the Horsemen at 1-9. In the first of four quarter-final games the Horsemen pulled off the upset as they knocked off the number one seed, Run & Gun 74-73. The Horsemen were led by Johnny Pereira (30), Alex DoSouto (30), Jordan Williams (10) and Ryan O’Neil (4) while Max Barbosa (34), Shaun Roach (19), Jared Terrell (16) and Matt Steib (4) led Run & Gun. In the next game the Bullets held on for a 64-55 win over the Diplomats. Brendan MacDonald (20), Akil Sneed (15), Trey Gomes (10), Anthony DePina (8), Donnie Whalen (6) and Habib Omar (2) led the Bullets while the Diplomats were led by James Hunter (25), Zach Acorn (18), Racquish Leard (7), Dwayne Harper (3) and Robert Goldsmith (2). In the next game it was the Tsunami, opening up a lead at the half and then holding on to beat the Track Stars 52-48. The Tsunami were led by Jonge DaSilva (17), Tyrik Jackson (13), Elijah Agard (7), Julian Del Solar (6), Jarris Charley (5) and Michael Montrond (4). The Track Stars, who put up a great comeback were led by Tyrell Pugh (22), Marquis Spriggs (13), Nick Pires (5), Tino Goncalves (5), Ryan Gunter (2) and Joey Centeio (2). In the final game of the night it was the Ballers knocking off C-Town 71-60. The Ballers were led by Melvin Goncalves (21), Daniel Santos (21) Dante Blackwell (12), Hollister Elliot (11) and Rayshaw Matthews (6) while C-Town was led by Daquan Hardy (21), Bernard Barbosa (17), Joao Fernandes (10), Beethovens Laguerre (8), Alex DePina (2) and Paul Lewis (2). In the first of two semi-final games it was the Tsunami rallying from a half-time deficit to pull out a 72-67 win over the Horsemen. Tyrik Jackson (23), Jarris Charley (12), Elijah Agard (10), Brandon Donald (9), Michael Montrond (8), Jonge DaSilva (4), Julian DelSolar (3) and Eduardo DeLeon (2) led the Tsunami while the Horsemen were led by Alex DoSouto (23), Johnny Pereira (14), Johnathon Lopes (11), Ryan O’Neil (9), Gary St. Cyr (5), Jordan Willliams (2), Paulo Maia (2) and Kalonji Fernandes (1). In the second game the Ballers took out last year’s champions the Bullets by a score of 52-47. The Ballers were led by Daniel Santos (25), Melvin Goncalves (12), Dante Blackwell (5), Hollister Elliot (5), Manny Andrade (3) and Rayshaw Matthews (2) while Brendan MacDonald (13), Joey Pires (11), Donnie Whalen (10) Anthony DePina (6), Akil Sneed (5) and Trey Gomes (2) led the Bullets. This set up the Tsunami and the Ballers to play for the championship. This was a terrific game as the Ballers opened up a big lead, the Tsunami came roaring back and we needed overtime before the Tsumani captured a 72-65 victory. The Tsunami were led by Elijah Agard (16), Tyrik Jackson (16), Michael Montrond (11), Jarris Charley (11), Jonge DaSilva (9), Julian DelSolar (6) and Bruce Cardoso (2) while the Ballers were paced on offense by Melvin Goncalves (20), Dante Blackwell (15), Daniel Santos (13), Hollister Elliot (12), Rayshaw Matthews (3) and Manny Andrade (2).
