Mayor Thomas Menino has frequently noted the city spends $300 million a year on health care costs for its employees. He has proposed setting up a local version of the state’s Group Insurance Commission.
Asked whether he supports Menino’s proposal, newly-elected City Council President Stephen Murphy told Greater Boston’s Emily Rooney Tuesday night, “It’s going to be difficult, Emily.” It’s a “bit unfair” to unions and de-powers their place at the negotiating table, he said.
Murphy added that there was “no guarantee it would be passed at the State House” if the proposal passed the City Council.
According to a State House News Service account, Menino had warned in November of a “catastrophe in local government” without action. The Boston Municipal Research Bureau has also made similarly dire predictions.
