Anti-bullying message staged at Strand Theatre next week

Urbanity Dance, the largest contemporary dance company in Boston, will stage two shows at the Strand Theatre in Dorchester next Friday, November 18. “Call of Courage” is billed as a night of dance and storytelling to create a platform to depict bullying and how we can stop it with a powerful performance of investigation, empowerment and bystander intervention.

The shows— including an 11 a.m. matinee for Boston school students— are staged in collaboration with the Max Warburg Courage Curriculum and musician Ryan Edwards.

The evening performance will be at 7 p.m., with doors will open at 6:30. Each show will have a post-show discussion led by Boston public school students.

Urbanity’s ten professional dancers work with the City of Boston and The Max Warburg Courage Curriculum. They will engage the audience with the stories of perseverance depicted in Call of Courage, which use immersive and powerful choreography. The event is sponsored by the Mayor’s Office of Arts and Culture.

Urbanity Dance uses the universal language of movement to portray a complex narrative of cultural issues, like discrimination and violence, to create a line of distinction between what it means to play and what it means to harm.

They will exclude berating harmful actions and alternatively use motifs, childhood games and humor to explore these power dynamics in a constructive way, ultimately resulting in a celebration of difference by unveiling the power and difference one person can by taking a stand against the norm.

The Strand Theatre is located at 543 Columbia Rd., Dorchester. Call of Courage tickets range from $15-$50 with discounts being given to college and Boston public school students. If you need special seating accommodations, please contact Marco Carneiro at marco@urbanitydance.org.
