Today: Bike & Brew fest pairs Dot’s hottest trends

Peabody Square will be transformed into a beer garden ringed by food trucks next week as Greater Ashmont Main Streets stages the first-ever Dorchester Bike & Brew Fest. The event kicks off on Sept. 15 at 5 p.m. at the corner of Dorchester Avenue and Talbot Avenue, next to Ashmont Grill.

Dorchester Bike & Brew’s mission is to support local businesses and raise awareness of the importance of cycling infrastructure in the city, said Jenn Cartee, the executive director of the Greater Ashmont Main Streets organization.

“Twenty-five percent of households are car free in the Greater Ashmont Main Streets area,” said Cartee. “The ability to get back and forth from where you need to be can be a truly equalizing force and can help connect neighborhoods where transit just doesn’t exist. Anything else we can do to make it a cycling friendly city is the way to go.”

Dot’s cycling community and the city’s burgeoning crop of brewmakers make for a natural pairing.

Modeled after Washington Gateway Main Street’s South End Summer Soulstice, the inaugural Dorchester event will also serve as kick-off for the city’s cycling celebration weekend. Cartee said the event will be family friendly and fun, including musical guests Eric Royer’s One Man Band and Krista Page y los Super Vatos. Giveaways, spoke rides, presentations and talks, and merchandise availability are also planned. Co-hosts include DotBike, the Boston Cyclists Union, and MassBike.

Mayor of Dorchester Deirdre Habershaw will be the ceremonial host and cut the ribbon on the event at the Cycle Aid station at the Peabody West Plaza, a self-service station for bikes that adds to cycling infrastructure and DIY tools.

Hive, the stager of the beer garden, will feature brews and wines from Downeast Cider House, 90+ Cellars, Mighty Squirrel Brewery, and Percival Beer Company. The Boston Water and Sewer Commisison’s H2Go water trailer will also be in the mix.

Bonetown Burgers will sell burgers and hot dogs alongside food vendors Jamaica Mi Hungry, Sheherazad, and Fat Boyfriend Bakery.

The bike community pop-ups and tabling will feature Ashmont Cycles, Balloons Extraordinaire, Bikes Not Bombs, Black Girls Do Bike, BPD C11 Pedal Bike Officers, Bowdoin Bike School, DotBike, Boston Cyclists Union, MassBike, Harbor Health Services Inc., HubWay, Roxbury Rides, Hub on Wheels, Livable Streets, MassRIDES, WalkBoston, and Vision Zero.
