City seeks developer for old B-3 police station site

The city’s Department of Neighborhood Development is seeking a buyer to redevelop two large parcels of land — including the former home of the B-3 police station next to the Fairmount Line—at the corner of Morton and Hopkins streets in Dorchester.

In a Request for Proposals (RFP) made public on Tuesday, the city agency said community input has informed the preferred use for the 34,000-square foot site: A mixed-use building to rise from the now vacant-land to include affordable housing and commercial uses. The city ‘s asking price for the land is $500,000. Bids are due into City Hall by Oct. 3.

According to DND, whose representatives met with residents to scope out possible uses for the property, the community will not support certain “passive uses”— like a warehouse— or a “liquor store, nail salon, phone store, and fast food.” The RFP also requires that 5,000 square feet on Hopkins Street be set aside for community green space.

The former police station building was torn down in July 2013 as part of an effort to replace a key bridge that carried Morton Street over the commuter rail tracks.
