Council aims to get resident input on police body cameras

Updated April 22, 3 p.m.: City Councillor Andrea Campbell will be facilitating community meetings over the coming weeks to discuss a pilot program of body-worn cameras on the city’s police officers.

One of the meetings will be held in Dorchester on Thurs., April 28, at First Parish Church from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Representatives from the Boston Police Department will attend all three meetings. Councillor At-Large Annissa Essaibi-George, a member of the Public Safety Committee, will help organize the First Parish session.

“The goal of the meetings is two-fold,” said Campbell. They will “give us an opportunity to educate the public on this pilot program as well as give us an opportunity to hear from the public.” A second hearing is tentatively scheduled for May 5 at City Hall.

Campbell, who voiced support for body cameras during her successful campaign last year, hopes to take input from the meetings and incorporate them into the larger conversation about the pilot program. “Too often we make decisions without the input of residents,” she said. “Any time we make any policy, it is important that the community be part of those conversations.”

Last week, the Massachusetts Executive Office of Public Safety and the Security Of ce of Grants & Research announced that $275,000 would be made available to the city of Boston to fund body-worn camera pilot programs.

“We are grateful that our elected officials have recognized the importance of such programs and have made this funding available,” said Segun Idowu, a co-organizer of the Boston Police Camera Action Team (BPCAT).

“It’s our hope that the [police] commissioner does not let this opportunity pass him by,” said Idowu, whose group has publicly called on the Walsh administration to implement a pilot program as soon as possible.

In a recent interview, Police Commissioner William Evans said, “I know the momentum is for everyone having them, although I don’t really think we need them. I think we’ve shown what kind of a class act department we are, but we are going to give them a try and see if the results are positive.”
