Mattapan Community Health Center celebrates 20 years of health care revival

Mattapan Community Health Center (MCHC) will host its 20th annual Health Care Revival on Saturday, September 10 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Boston Public Health Commission Campus at 249 River St., Mattapan. The theme of Health Care Revival 20 is “Changing. Growing. Moving Forward.” The outdoor Revival is held under tents and will feature free health screenings, health information, diabetes, mammography and prostate chat stations, a tent for teens, inspirational music, door prizes, and activities for all ages. There will also be raffles held throughout the day beginning at 10 a.m. A light breakfast, lunch and beverages will be provided.

Health Care Revival was created in 1997 to address Mattapan’s infant mortality crisis, which was the highest in in the city of Boston at that time. Since then, Health Care Revival has grown to become a Mattapan tradition that draws residents from across the community to engage in a dialogue about many other health problems.

“We took a bold step in 1997 and held the First Annual Health Care Revival with 100 people in attendance,” said Dr. Azzie Young, president and chief executive officer of the health center. “Every year, more people come. As we move into our third decade of Health Care Revival, Mattapan Community Health Center is here for the long term serving our neighbors inside and outside our walls.”

The keynote speaker at Saturday’s event will be Dr. Christopher Shanahan, an adult medicine doctor at MCHC and Boston Medical Center, who will reflect on Health Care Revival’s 20 years of growth and change. An afternoon discussion by MCHC’s Dr. Stephen Wright will focus on Hearth Health, Medication Management, and the use of Technology and mobile devices to monitor one’s health. The health center’s Technology Team will be available to assist participants in making their smart phones work smarter for their health.

In addition, the MCHC Community Service Award will be presented to William Netter, Prostate Health Education Network and Phyllis Sims, Boston Public Health Commission. These award recipients are being saluted for their extraordinary commitment and dedication to the community.

Founded in 1972, MCHC provides a broad array of health services, including primary care, dental care, OB-GYN, preventive health services, and behavioral health services. The health center also provides on-site mammography services in partnership with Boston Medical Center and Mass General Hospital.

MCHC is the only comprehensive community health center in Mattapan and Hyde Park and is the largest employer in Mattapan. All of MCHC’s partners have been instrumental in its 44 years of progress.
