Union, BPD agree to pilot body camera program

Up to 100 Boston Police officers will test out a body camera initiative for six months, according to an agreement between the city and the Boston Police Patrolmen’s Association that was announced on Tuesday. A start date for the pilot program has not yet been finalized.

Mayor Walsh’s budget for the new year included $500,000 to support the effort, which comes after a campaign by activists seeking to launch such a program in Boston.

In a statement issued by the Mayor Walsh’s Office on Tuesday, Commissioner William Evans framed the deal as “ a positive development. “We are committed to building on the trust we have earned with our constituents while keeping our community safe,” said Evans.

BPPA President Patrick M. Rose said he believes that “this pilot program will showcase, to all of the citizens of Boston, the fine work that our members do on a day to day basis.”
