Dot letter carriers lauded for helping MDA

Letter carriers from Dorchester are among the most supportive in the state when it comes to raising money and awareness for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) in 2016. The Dorchester Center branch #34 of the National Association of Letter Carriers were the third highest raising office, raising over $2,000 for MDA.

Michael Murray, who serves as Secretary Treasurer for Branch 34, received the award on Dec. 13 for Dorchester Center Letter Carriers outstanding performance.

“Branch #34 does tons of raffles within their staff, a golf tournament and a bowl-a-thon,” said Jenny Richard, Fundraising Coordinator for MDA. “They are very involved and constantly working towards raising money for us every month. They put in a lot of time and effort and we are very thankful.”

There are 53 post offices in and around Boston that are affiliated with Branch #34, which raised $26,000 for the cause last year. The funds benefit the care centers and clinics in Massachusetts that MDA funds, including Lahey Clinic, TUFTS Medical Center Hospital, Massachusetts General Hospital, Children’s Hospital Boston, Brigham & Women’s Hospital and UMass Memorial Medical Center.

The funds will also be used for support groups, equipment lending, the MDA summer camp, which is a one week handicap accessible camp where kids who have Muscular Dystrophy can go horseback riding and zip lining, among many other activities they wouldn’t normally have access to, and the various research projects MDA is working on all over the world.
