Firearm found in girl’s backpack at St. John Paul II campus

A young elementary school girl brought a firearm to school in a backpack on Friday at the Saint John Paul II Columbia Campus in Dorchester, according to Boston Police and the Archdiocese of Boston.

Boston Police officials said after 7 a.m. this morning, before the start of the school day, staff members at the Columbia campus observed a firearm in the student’s bag and summoned police to the scene. Further inquiry found that the bag belonged to another family member, and the little girl – who was said to be 7 years old – mistakenly brought the wrong backpack to school.

The family member who had the gun was licensed to have the firearm but was summoned to court on charges that were not yet available to the Reporter.

Boston Police did not immediately know if the gun was loaded.

No arrests were made in the case.

In a letter from the central office of Saint John Paul II Academy, Regional Director Catherine Brandley said they contacted police immediately.

“The Boston Police were contacted immediately, and they came to the school to assist with the matter,” read the letter. “At no time was there a threat or danger to the students, staff, or anyone. We continue to appreciate and value our partnership between our community of families and the Boston Police Department.”
