Saturday event in Fields Corner highlights Vietnamese culture, 'Black April'

The 1975 Vietnamese Diaspora Commemoration Initiative is hosting an "Intergenerational Cultural Commemoration Event" in Fields Corner on Saturday, April 20.

This event, titled "Chương Trình Tưởng Niệm, Liên Thế Hệ,” aims to commemorate Black April, a significant moment in Vietnamese Diaspora history, and showcase Vietnamese culture through an intergenerational lens. Held at the VietAID Community Center on Charle Street, the event (12-3p.m.) will welcome individuals and families to share their personal and collective history in an inclusive bilingual space.

Led by Dorchester-based artist Trân Vũ and mental health clinician Linh-Phương Vũ, activities include Vietnamese arts performances, visual exhibitions, and local Vietnamese cuisine. Elected officials and community leaders will also deliver speeches.

“We want it to be a space where our Vietnamese diaspora community in Dorchester can have a space that we can call our own,” said Linh.

The event seeks to engage the wider community in the 1975 Vietnamese Diaspora Memorial project and is supported by the Mayor’s Office of the Arts at the City of Boston and local businesses in Boston Little Saigon Cultural District. Admission is free, and RSVPs are encouraged for attendance.

The group previously organized a public meeting last December to discuss plans for a commemorative project marking the 50th anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War in 2025.
