Two charged with gunpoint robbery of livery driver in Mattapan

The Boston Police Department reports a livery driver who picked up two guys at 113 Greenbrier St. yesterday afternoon for a trip to Mattapan had just turned onto Hazleton Street when "one of the suspects put what he thought was a gun to the back of his head and robbed of $400 in cash, his wedding band, his cell phone, Motorola walkie talkie, his earrings and a car radio faceplate."  Read more

Pop Warner's Mattapan Patriots Cheerleading team has qualified for the Pop Warner National Cheer & Dance Championships held at the Wide World of Sports Complex at the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, FL. The squad must now raise funds they need to pay for the trip.

The D-Squad cheerleaders placed second in the New England Regional Championships on Saturday, Nov. 20, which consisted of a two-and-a-half minute routine. The placement earned them a spot in the national championship games amidst 500 other cheerleader squads from across the nation. The contest will be will be held from Dec. 6 to Dec. 10 alongside the Pop Warner Super Bowl.  Read more

Merchants, residents cheers new Main Streets for Mattapan Square

Mattapan Square has finally been designated for a branch of Boston’s Main Streets program, which has helped revitalize several other neighborhood business districts over the last 15 years. As the twentieth  Main Streets district, Mattapan Square’s application was accepted in August of this year and formally designated in early November by Mayor Tom Menino.  Read more

Residents get close-up view of police training at BPD Academy

The Boston Police Department held the first session of a new Citizens Police Academy for Area B-3 residents on Monday evening at the BPD’s training facility in Hyde Park. For the next three weeks, the “cadets” will be bussed around the police academy and other law enforcement locations in order to get a taste of what it means to be a police officer patrolling the streets of Boston.  Read more

Mildred Ave. event connects students to financial aid

An event on Wednesday afternoon at Mattapan's Mildred Avenue Community Center will help prospective college students connect with financial aid opportunities. The event, sponsored by the Massachusetts Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (MASFAA), will take place from 12:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. Organizers say the main goal is to make students aware of the importance of postsecondary education and the financial aid resources that are available to assist them.  Read more

Buses to replace trolleys this weekend between Ashmont-Mattapan

Ongoing construction work at Ashmont station will require a shut down of the Mattapan High-Speed trolley service this Saturday and Sunday (Nov. 20-21), according to the MBTA. Shuttle buses will replace trolleys beginning at the start of service on Saturday and continue until the end of service on Sunday.  Read more

Man shot to death in Mattapan

The Boston Police Department reports a man was found with multiple gunshot wounds around 12:30 a.m. on Thursday at 22 Fessenden St.

The man, 35, was rushed to Boston Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Mattapan CDC prepares to submit plans for Morton St. apartments to city, state

The Mattapan Community Development Corporation announced a major construction project in the works for Morton St. at a community meeting at Mildred Ave. on Wednesday evening. The project, dubbed "Morton St. Homes" will add a $2 Million apartment building from 757 to 769 Morton St. The building is planned to include rental housing units 36 low to moderate income families, as well as 7,800 square feet of commercial space on the ground floor. The CDC has been in talks with local banks in an attempt to open a branch in the area. Other amenities will include a 30-space parking lot and a 7,000 ft. green space on the level above the ground floor.  Read more
