To the Editor:

Lawton: Lack of representation, turnout has hurt Fifth Suffolk
Oct. 7, 2010
To the Editor:
The Boston Globe endorsement of state representative candidate Carlos Henriquez and last minute support from former state rep Marie St. Fleur during the September primary signal the continuation of a “tradition” the people of Dorchester and Roxbury can no longer afford. As the Globe opined, “he (Henriquez) will be the best candidate to continue the tradition of leadership from the Fifth Suffolk district.”
What leadership tradition is that, of leaving the district in the lurch by leaving for other jobs?
The geographic majority of the Fifth Suffolk clearly disagrees with the Globe’s assessment of what we need in new leadership, as I carried a majority of the district’s precincts. Read more
Notion of ‘responsibility’ is spurring Henriquez

Carlos HenriquezWeeks before the Sept. 14 primary, the influential Ward 15 Democratic Committee met and declined to endorse either one of the top two candidates in the race to replace former state Rep. Marie St. Fleur.
Neither Barry Lawton nor Carlos Henriquez was able to gain two-thirds approval of the committee, which had played a crucial role in grooming past candidates for Fifth Suffolk state representative.
Henriquez, 33, a former City Hall staffer making his third run for public office, was feeling good, since Lawton, a high school teacher and former State House aide, is a longtime member of the committee. Read more
Reporter’s Notebook: Fifth District contenders make their cases at forum

Two of the four Democrats vying to replace former state Rep. Marie St. Fleur tackled a slew of issues at a Tuesday night forum, including illegal immigration, casino gambling, and federal stimulus funds. Few differences emerged between high school teacher Barry Lawton and former City Hall aide Carlos Henriquez at a forum sponsored by nonpartisan voting rights group MassVOTE and held at Hibernian Hall. The Dorchester Reporter was a co-sponsor.
The two other Democrats in the Fifth Suffolk District race, former state Rep. Althea Garrison and perennial candidate Roy Owens, were no-shows. Read more
Voters deserve special leadership

Voters going to the polls September 14 to fill the vacant Fifth Suffolk District House seat – and given the high stakes let’s hope there’s a big turnout – will cast one of their most important ballots ever.
The levels of crime, poverty, and joblessness in our community remain unacceptably high. As Massachusetts sees signs of a desperately needed economic recovery ahead, we desperately need a representative on Beacon Hill who will not only lend us a strong voice but also take strong action to make sure our priority issues are addressed and that our community is not left behind… again. Reporter’s Notebook: The politics of closing a neighborhood library

It usually goes like this: An angry mob, largely clueless and fearful of government taking away their guns and religion, faces off against an elected or appointed official who attempts to explain how government actually works.
But there was somewhat of a role reversal this week, as an angry mob that included a number of elected officials at the state and local level, clinging to four branch libraries slated for closure, attempted to explain how government works to the Boston Public Library board of trustees. Read more

From the State House News Service comes a summary of the remarks former state Rep. Marie St. Fleur made Tuesday to her former colleagues on the House floor.
St. Fleur this week started a job in the Menino administration as its chief of advocacy and strategic investment. She served in the Fifth Suffolk District seat for just over a decade, winning a special election in 1999. Read more
