Meeting signals discord over Main Streets application

The Mattapan Board of Trade held a community meeting on Tuesday night at the Mattapan Library regarding emerging plans to seek admission into the city’s Main Streets program. The meeting — which began as a simple overview and call-to-arms for winning Main Streets designation for the neighborhood— turned into a standoff between the Mattapan Board of Trade and Morton Street Village Board of Commerce, which has also held meetings to organize local residents and merchants around the idea of securing a Main Streets designation for the neighborhood. In the dark is not where Dan Hardaway wants to run his Mattapan boutique, Final Touch with Class, one of fourteen businesses he said are cast in the shadows along Morton Street near the Morton Street MBTA station on the commuter rail.
It has been a two-year struggle for the Morton Street Board of Trade to get additional or stronger streetlights installed along the stretch of West Selden Street and Morton to Norfolk and Blue Hill avenues, yet Hardaway says not much has come of it. Read more
