The US Postal Service says it will temporarily close its Fields Corner retail branch at 218 Adams St. next month after its lease on the space expires, shifting post office box operations to a nearby postal annex and directing customers seeking retail services to Codman Square.
The Fields Corner Post Office will close effective Mon., Oct. 26, according to a notice issued by USPS on Wednesday.
The announcement comes less than a week after USPS officials told the Reporter that the agency was “looking at all options” as the lease for the branch inside the O’Hearn Building approached its expiration date.
USPS characterized the shutdown as a temporary closing, but its announcement did not say when—or where—a full-service Fields Corner branch might reopen. The building it now occupies on Adams Street is expected to be renovated as part of a re-development plan that was approved by city planners in 2025. Work has not begun yet.
In an interview with the Reporter this week, Congressman Stephen Lynch said he had hoped to keep the 02122 office open.
“Here in 02122, the facility there in Fields Corner is serving a very heavy-use area,” Lynch said. “There’s a significant volume of mail coming through that post office.”
The closure, however fits a pattern starting to impact other urban neighborhoods, including Allston and South Boston, where expiring leases are not being extended, usually due to high rents that the federal government is now unwilling to pay in markets like the Northeast.
“We’ve got to realize there are regional differences here,” Lynch said. “We can’t be treating every single community as if it were somewhere in the South or the Midwest.”
Lynch said he has personally worked with a South Boston property owner and postal officials for years in an effort to preserve the 02127 branch on East 3rd St. The owner, he said, was willing to accept less than market value as a community benefit, but the parties still could not reach terms.
“Unfortunately, we’re going to lose that post office eventually,” Lynch said. “I’m worried about some other sites.”
In the Fields Corner case, the O’Hearn Building was sold last year to the Beantown Companies of Waltham. The Reporter has contacted Beantown Companies about the postal lease but has not received a response.
Beginning Oct. 26, customers who currently use post office boxes at the Adams Street branch will have their box operations transferred to the 02122 Annex at 18 Clayton St., less than a mile away.
USPS says post office boxes at the Clayton Street annex will be accessible 24 hours a day.
The annex will also operate a pickup-only window from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 9:30 a.m. to noon on Saturdays, according to the statement from USPS. Customers picking up held mail, items requiring signatures, or oversized packages should bring a government-issued photo identification, USPS said.
The Clayton Street location is already used as the Fields Corner carrier annex. The Postal Service has long operated both the retail office at 218 Adams St. and the carrier facility at 18 Clayton St.
Customers who need to buy stamps, mail packages, or conduct other retail transactions are being directed to the Codman Square Post Office, 554 Washington St., which is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays, according to USPS.
USPS spokesperson Judy Ferriera told the Reporter last week that postal officials were considering their options as the lease approached expiration.
