American voters delivered a resounding rebuke to an increasingly deranged Donald Trump and his pathetic Republican enablers in Congress this week. It was a historic and well-deserved rejection of the person and the once-Grand Old Party that he has come to personify, to their everlasting humiliation.

When Democrats regain control of the US House and US Senate in January, they’ll face a long checklist of pressing issues, from ending the illegal war against Iran to offering relief from inflation and out-of-control fuel costs. Hopefully, those Republicans who survived Tuesday’s shellacking— or watched fearfully from the sidelines— will take their own action in the lame duck session.

But, when the new Congress is seated, the very first order of business must be to hold this administration accountable for its many abuses of power, including the murders with immunity of men and women— including American citizens—by masked federal agents as part of Trump’s jihad against immigrants.

History will show that the real backlash to this wicked regime’s behavior began in the cold winter of 2025 as Americans of all stripes watched, horrified, as their fellow citizens were executed on the streets of Minneapolis by masked gunmen masquerading as law enforcement, who were then hurried out of state and hidden away from scrutiny by Trump’s henchmen in the White House.

The men who murdered Renee Good and Alex Pretti remain shielded by Trump and his lieutenants, who should themselves be held criminally responsible as accessories after the fact. The same holds true for those responsible for the July 2026 murder of Sebastian Duran Guerrero— also executed by a DHS gunman looking to round up brown people in Biddeford, Maine. It wasn’t just tariffs and high gas prices that brought down Susan Collins on Tuesday night. Voters clearly haven’t forgotten Mr. Guerrero’s killing or his family’s grief.

Two weeks ago, our own Congresswoman, Ayanna Pressley, visited Minnesota to support Democrats seeking election there, including the state Attorney General Keith Ellison, who has been stymied thus far in his efforts to prosecute the agents responsible for the ICE abuses in that state. Pressley and Sen. Ed Markey filed legislation to end qualified immunity for federal law enforcement officers last spring. Republicans, of course, blocked it. That can— and must— be advanced early in the new Congress.

“It is an unjust legal doctrine,” Pressley said in an interview with the DotLife podcast last week. “In the same way that if a lawyer harmed you, you’d have recourse for negligence, or a doctor, malpractice, the same should exist when it comes to federal law enforcement.”

The newly seated Democrat majority needs to be bold and unyielding in the pursuit of justice. Pressley and her colleagues should use their authority and majority to go beyond the individual agents who pulled the trigger and murdered people on our streets under the guise of Trump’s roundup. Their supervisors — all the way up to the White House — who served as accomplices and covered-up their crimes must be held accountable, too.

“I find that we’re often wanting to prove that we’re the adults in the room, but the electorate want us to prove that we’re the fighters in the room,” Pressley said. “And they get that we’re not going to win every fight. You might swing and miss, but at least swing.”

We expect this next Congress to get serious about prosecuting the case against this wretched regime. And yes, Pressley and her Democratic colleagues face a diabolical president with veto power. But, as Pressley said: “When you have the power, you have to use it.” We trust that she— and other Dems from our state— will be unflinching and relentless in the pursuit of justice.
