In Dorchester’s Lower Mills, at the site of the former Walter Baker & Company Chocolate Factory, a beautiful one-bedroom, two-bathroom, 1,276 square-foot unit sitting high above the Neponset River in the sought-after Water Mill Building at the Baker Square Condominiums is on the market for $750,000.
In a condo complex with units ranging from 840 to 2,400 square feet, Unit WM205 might just be the sweetest of them all, says the realtor and vice president at Compass Leslie MacKinnon.
“It’s extremely special. I think it is the most unique property in the Baker Chocolate Factory, particularly in the Water Mill Building,” said MacKinnon. “It has 11-foot-wide Palladian windows throughout the entire living space and overlooks the Neponset River. You can see all sorts of wildlife go by, and you can see the rushing water.”
Current owner Claire Hughes said that she and her husband Steve love to “waste time” looking out the three large windows. “We have been able to see the beaver swimming up and down the river as well as an occasional river otter and muskrats. There are various herons that will fish for their lunch outside our windows as well as many other bird species. Particularly in the spring when the geese have their brood of goslings following them around.”
In addition to the windows, the unit’s 12-foot-high ceilings make it feel as though you are outside with the wildlife and running water.

On the opposite wall, beautifully exposed brick and beams highlight the unit’s historic mill-time character. But the charm is paired with modern luxury brought on with recent upgrades throughout the home, including a custom California Closets entertainment center and two bedroom closets, custom shades in the living and dining areas, and a renovated kitchen. The bathrooms have also been updated, and a new heat pump was added to the dining room last year.

The amenities continue outside the unit, too. “There is a heated swimming pool, and there’s a full gym,” said MacKinnon. “This is not your typical development community small workout space; this is actually a full gym. It is pretty amazing.”
She added, “There’s also a community space and a gorgeous outdoor patio that’s for all the residents to use. It’s huge. It has grills and overlooks the river. There’s all sorts of seating out there, including lounge chairs, which is really nice.”
The community is one of Claire Hughes’s favorite parts about Baker Square. “We love the active community of residents here as well, ready to help if needed and have an assortment of activities for the community.”
MacKinnon agrees, and adds: “If you’re looking to downsize, but live in a really dynamic community close to everything and walk-able to great restaurants in Lower Mills and Milton, and you really want to still feel connected, yet kind of have a more urban feel to your environment, this is a great option.”
