Jimmy Hayes, a homegrown hockey star who won a national championship with Boston College before playing seven seasons as a professional— including two with the Boston Bruins— has died at age 31.
The Dorchester native last played hockey in the NHL in the 2017-2018 season for the New Jersey Devils. His younger brother Kevin currently plays for the Philadelphia Flyers.
The news of his death was relayed across the neighborhood this morning by neighbors and friends stunned by his passing. The cause of death was not immediately evident.
Jimmy Hayes grew up on Westglow Street in Dorchester’s Neponset neighborhood, where he has long been a local hero. His framed jersey hangs in a place of honor at the Eire Pub in Adams Corner.
The Boston Bruins posted this statement on their Twitter feed on Monday afternoon:

The Boston Bruins also tweeted out a statement from team captain Patrice Bergeron, who said: “I’m devastated to learn of the passing of my friend Jimmy Hayes. It was a pleasure getting to know Jimmy, and he was such a joy to be around both on and off the ice. I’ll always remember his big smile— he was so positive and full of life… We’ve lost a great person.”
Bergeron continued: “My family and I send our heartfelt condolences to his wife Kristen, their two young boys, his brother Kevin, and the rest of his family during this difficult time.”
