Citing upgrades to Ashmont Station and the Mattapan trolley line, the MBTA announced passengers will be boarding shuttle buses instead of trains and trolleys between JFK/UMass station in Columbia Point and the terminus in Mattapan Square on July 16.

The shuttle buses are set to run inbound and outbound, from the start of service that day to 6 p.m., when train and trolleys will resume carrying passengers.

The work involves replacing a train “signal house” at Ashmont. Members of the MBTA’s Mattapan Line upgrade team plan to use the service interruption to use radar on the corridor to help with improvements to the trolley line.

“We know any diversion in regular train service can be a frustration, and we thank our Ashmont and Mattapan Line riders for their patience as we accomplish this important work,” Steve Poftak, the MBTA’s general manager, said in a statement. “When this work is complete, it will ultimately translate into a better, more reliable commute for our Ashmont and Mattapan riders.”

The MBTA plans to spend the next decade upgrading the Mattapan Line, which serves 6,600 riders daily through trolleys that date back to the 1940s and run for 2.6 miles.
