A Dorchester automotive shop that has been a mainstay on Gallivan Boulevard since 1980 will lower its garage doors for the final time this week. Mufflerman, which is located in the rear of a retail plaza next to Toohig Park at 624 Gallivan, will fix its last suspension on Friday, according to second-generation owner Bob Webster, whose parents Chuck and Elaine ran the shop before him.
“I just turned 70 and I didn’t want to sign on for another ten years,” said Webster, who works alongside Joe Morrison, who has been an employee in the six-bay garage since he turned 18.
When reached on Monday, Webster and Morrison were busy working on several vehicles. But Webster is also hustling to meet a June 1 deadline to clear out decades of equipment and collectibles from the offices to deliver the space empty to James Rogan, the landlord.
Rogan, who also owns the block of buildings that surround the Mufflerman garage, said on Monday that he has engaged a realtor in hopes of finding a new tenant. “They were a great tenant,” he said of the Websters. “I’m sorry to see them go.”
What’s next for Bob Webster? “Getting caught up on that yard work, I guess,” he said.
