The 29th annual Mother’s Day Walk for Peace will hit the streets of Dorchester this Sunday (May 11). The event, which features a 3.2-mile walk that begins and ends at Town Field in Fields Corner, benefits the Louis D. Brown Peace Institute.

Registration will begin at Town Field at 7 a.m. with a speaking program set for 8 a.m. in the park at 1565 Dorchester Avenue. Free parking is available in the morning only at the Fields Corner mall lot (500-520 Geneva Ave.) There will be a closing ceremony at Town Field around 10:30 a.m.

The Mother’s Walk was launched in 1996 by Clementina Chery as a memorial for her son, Louis D. Brown, who was murdered in a shooting on nearby Geneva Avenue in 1995.

The event has grown over the last two decades to include many other survivor families and people dedicated to the cause of peace in our city and world.

Many walkers form teams that join together to raise funds for the Peace Institute, which offers support services for the survivors of homicide victims and other programs. You can learn more about the walk and the Peace Institute at mothersdaywalk4peace.org.
